Decorate a Home You Love Coming Back To

Hi there,

Let me tell you something I’ve learned, not just from working in interior decorating, but from creating my own home, too: Your home should reflect you and the people you share it with.

Sure, trends can be fun, but here's the thing - decorating isn’t about keeping up. It’s about coming home. It’s about creating a space where you can breathe deeper, feel lighter, and maybe even do a little happy dance when you walk in the door after a long day.

If neutrals and minimalist spaces make you feel calm and collected, then go for it. If color gives you life and mismatched vintage pieces make your heart skip a beat, lean in completely. Your style doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else but you.

Here are a few gentle tips to help you decorate for you:

1. Ask how you want to feel in each room.

Do you want your bedroom to feel like a cozy cocoon? Or your kitchen to feel energizing and playful? Start with feeling, then pick colors, textures, and pieces that support that vibe.

2. Collect what you love.

You don’t have to buy the matching furniture set. In fact, mixing old and new, soft and bold, or sleek and rustic can make your home feel layered and full of personality. That quirky thrift store lamp? If it makes you smile, it belongs.

3. Don’t rush the process.

It’s okay if your space takes time to come together. It can be tempting to by every from link you see on Instagram or Facebook because your favorite influencer has styled their home so beautifully. Trust me, I've been there.

Let your style evolve with you. Sometimes the best homes aren’t designed in a weekend: they’re gathered over years, like memories.

4. Use trends as inspiration, not instruction.

Trends can be great jumping-off points. If the current color of the year makes you swoon, embrace it! But if it feels forced, skip it guilt-free. Your home isn’t a showroom. It’s your sanctuary.

5. Let go of “perfect.”

Your home doesn’t have to be photo-ready all the time. It doesn’t have to impress anyone. It just has to feel like you. That’s more than enough.

So even if your gallery wall is a little wonky but filled with meaningful moments, or your throw pillows never quite hold that perfect karate chop, fill your space with things that make you ridiculously happy.

At the end of the day, decorating is emotional. It’s personal. It’s about creating balance, joy, and a space that supports your version of peace.

Decorate with whatever brings you happiness because you live there, and that’s what truly matters.

With love and way too many throw blankets,

Sarah
